Each repayment covers that period's interest and pays down part of the amount financed. Early on more of it is interest; by the end it is mostly principal.
A cash deposit or trade-in comes off the price before the loan starts. You borrow less, so both the repayment and the total interest fall.
A longer term spreads the amount over more repayments, so each one is smaller. You pay interest for longer, so the total cost goes up.
A balloon leaves a lump sum owing at the end. It lowers each repayment, but you still owe it, and you pay interest on it for the whole term.
The repayment is what leaves your account each period. The cost of finance is the interest plus every fee. Compare both before you choose.
Compare the same amount over its full term, with fees and any balloon counted. The lowest repayment is often not the cheapest loan.

How the figures are worked out, and what to do with them.
The calculators use standard amortisation: each repayment covers the interest for that period and pays down part of the amount financed, so the loan reaches zero, or the balloon, on the final repayment. The amount financed is the price less any deposit or trade-in, plus any fee you choose to add to the loan. Repayments are worked out in arrears at a fixed rate.
Yes. Enter the purchase price of the used truck, ute, car or trailer. Lenders often price used assets differently and may limit the term or balloon by the asset's age, so treat the result as a guide and ask us what applies to the specific vehicle.
Yes. A cash deposit or trade-in reduces the amount financed, which lowers every repayment and the total interest. The calculator shows the effect as soon as you change it.
A balloon, or residual, is a lump sum left owing at the end of the term. It lowers each regular repayment, but you still owe it, and you pay interest on it for the whole term, so the total cost is higher. Lenders limit the balloon by asset type and term, and it can never be more than the amount financed.
Yes. The finance comparison calculator puts up to three scenarios side by side, each with its own amount, rate, term, frequency, fees and balloon. It shows the repayment and the total payable, so you can see when a lower repayment actually costs more overall.
Yes. Open the asset finance repayment calculator and choose Equipment & Machinery as the finance type to load example figures for plant and equipment. The asset cash flow calculator also weighs what the machine earns against its repayment and running costs.
Yes. In the asset finance repayment calculator, choose Business Loans as the finance type for a loan without a deposit or balloon. The business finance budget calculator works from your monthly revenue, expenses and existing repayments to a repayment budget you set yourself.
No. Results are estimates based on the figures you enter. The rates and fees shown are illustrative assumptions, not lender offers. Your actual rate, fees, term and approval depend on the lender, the product, the asset and your circumstances.
Use Get a finance quote under any result. It opens our application form with the finance type, amount and estimate already filled in, so you only add your details. You can also call us or send an enquiry, and a specialist will compare lenders and handle the paperwork through to settlement.
Yes. Alongside the asset and business finance calculators there are home loan calculators (borrowing power, interest only, split loans, offset accounts, introductory and comparison rates, switching, reverse mortgages and rent vs buy), savings calculators, a budget planner, a credit card payoff calculator, income tax and gross up calculators, and property buying and selling cost calculators.
They use the 2026-27 rates published by State Revenue Office Victoria, State Revenue Office Tasmania and the ATO. Tasmania's first home buyer duty exemption on established homes ended on 30 June 2026, so it is no longer applied. Surcharges for trusts and absentee owners, and less common concessions, are not included.
Usually not. Cars are exempt, and trucks, machinery and equipment you claim depreciation on are dealt with by a balancing adjustment rather than CGT. CGT mainly applies to property, shares and business goodwill. Your accountant can confirm how a sale is treated.
No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us. If you choose Get a finance quote, the estimate is held in your browser tab only to fill in the application form, and it is cleared when you close the tab or submit.
Important information
Calculator results are indicative estimates only and do not constitute a finance quote, offer, approval or financial advice. Actual repayments, rates, fees and loan terms depend on the lender, product and individual circumstances.
Loan results assume a fixed rate and repayments in arrears. Example rates and fees are illustrative assumptions, not lender offers. Duty and land tax use the published rates of State Revenue Office Victoria and State Revenue Office Tasmania, and CGT and income tax use ATO rates for 2026-27 (income tax is also shown for 2025-26). Savings, home loan and property cost results are illustrative and assume the rates and costs you enter stay the same. Concessions and surcharges have conditions, so confirm your position with the SRO or your accountant.
